Centenary Celebrations on hold but preparations underway

Due to the ongoing conditions created by the CoVID-19 pandemic, it’s quite hard to hold the celebrations in which many people will come together hence increasing the risk of the spread of CoVID-19. The celebrations that had been planned to start in September 2020 were stayed.

In line with our theme for the Centenary “Remember, Renew, Recruit, Rejoice. 1921-2021”, a date to start the celebrations will be communicated in which all Legionaries shall be able to fully participate in the Celebrations.

Despite the postponment, a number of activities can continue and these are:

1. Centenary Memorial Magazine

The Senatus of Uganda will publish the Centenary Memorial magazine that will entail among others information about Legion of Mary in Uganda. The Centenary memorial magazine committee continues to receive articles from all over the country on the email; senatusofuganda@gmail.com.

The articles being received include stories of how Legion of Mary came to your diocese, achievements, challenges and what you think can help grow the apostolate further in your area. Kindly share with us historical pictures. All articles about Legion of Mary and/or relevant to the theme of the Centenary are much welcome.

The purpose of the magazine will be to document some hitherto unknown facts about Legion of Mary in Uganda and to provide new and recent data about the Legion of Mary as an organisation in the Catholic Church in Uganda among others. For any query, contact us and we shall respond.

2. In-Remembrance Register

As we celebrate 100 years of the existence of the Legion of Mary, as Legionaries, we would like to remind ourselves of the legacy left to us by those legionaries who established the Legion where we are, and the officers and members who served, most if not all now deceased.

All Praesidia are required to fill in this In-Remembrance Register by the end of December 2020, a copy submitted through the respective councils to the Senatus of Uganda and a copy retained for the priest who will be designated to say the Novena of Masses for the souls of these deceased brothers and sisters.

3. Celebrations at the different levels

As you may be aware, we had a plan for all the Praesidia and Councils to celebrate the centenary. The plan is detailed in the document available HERE for download. Find out what you can do in the meantime as the celebrations are on hold.

October Senatus meeting held on 18th October 2020

After a period of 6 months without holding our Senatus meeting due to the restrictions inorder to limit the spread of CoVID-19, Senatus of Uganda finally held it’s meeting on Sunday, 18th October 2020 upon the relaxation of the restrictions on churches.

Due to the limit of the congregations to 70 in the President of Uganda’s guidelines issued on 20th September 2020, most of the officers that could have willed to attend couldn’t.

Below is a summary of the issues discussed:

  1. Centenary Celebrations scheduled to begin in September 2020 were put on hold. Preparations for the centenary magazine are underway. Each council should write an article about the history of their council. For more guidelines, click here.
  2. All Legionaries were asked to continue praying for the new bishops; Rt. Rev. Eciru Joseph Oliach of Soroti diocese, Rt. Rev. Severinus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese and the most recent Archbishop, His Grace Lambert Bainomugisha of Mbarara Archdiocese. Let those that have offered a Spiritual bouquet submit to their respective higher councils.
  3. When praying for a departed Legionary, it’s only a Praesidium that uses secret bag collection not the Council. This note comes as we prepare for November, the month of our faithful departed.
  4. The Website for the Senatus of Uganda was to be out that week in a bid to help Senatus in delivering information. Kindly use it often and share the information to reach to all Legionaries.
  5. The Patrician groups that had been formed can start meeting in consultation with their Spiritual Director.

Each officer present received the following documents (Most are available for download except the correspondence from Concilium):

  1. Correspondence from Concilium (Contact your Correspondent)
  2. Guide on allocation of Legionary work during CoVID-19 period
  3. Guidelines for resuming Council meetings
  4. Guidelines for resuming of Praesidium meeting
  5. Concilium elections held in August
  6. Permission from the Bishop of Hoima Diocese to print Runyoro-Rutooro handbook of the Legion of Mary
  7. Questionnaire on Council progress. This was filled by all present. Incase you missed, kindly download and fill it and submit at the next meeting.

In the meeting, we received reports from Nsambya Comitium and Kabuwoko Comitium. All councils whose reports are due (according to the annual program) should prepare the reports and submit them.

Let’s continue to Pray the Rosary in this month. For information about how to enroll in the rosary confraternity, Click here.

Allocutio for the October Senatus meeting

Delivered by Rev. Fr. Munyandamutsa Augustine from Kabale Regia

The Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary (Appendix 7)

The Rosary is a powerful weapon that many Popes that among others Pope Pius IX have talked about.

This is a special month that is dedicated to the Holy Rosary after the battle at Lepanto.

The Spiritual reading in a special way talks about being part of the family-the Rosary Confraternity in which we dedicate to say at least 20 mysteries of the rosary in a week.

In reciting the Rosary meditatively; allowing it to take root in our hearts, we are promised by Mother Mary to among others get special protection.

Those who can be able to enroll in the Rosary Confraternity, you benefit from the spiritual benefits of the dominican order and the Rosary Confraternity.

Upon death, you benefit from the suffrages and indulgences obtained from the family of the Rosary Confraternity.

There are indulgencies that are obtained through reciting of the rosary i.e. plenary indulgencies when the rosary is recited in Church, in a family group, in a consecrated place or in a religious community. To obtain these plenary indulgencies, one must have a sacrament of confession,  have Eucharistic Communion and also pray for the Pope’s intentions.

Let’s always recite the Rosary as a group because we benefit greatly  than individually but this should not stop us from praying the Rosary individually.

Notice of election of the Senatus Treasurer

At the October Senatus meeting, notice was given for the election of the Treasurer in the November meeting.

The term of the Treasurer expired in September but due to the CoVID-19 restrictions, we couldn’t meet and have the election.
