The Concilium Legionis Mariae has officially approved the elevation of Tororo Comitium to Regia status. This marks a significant milestone, making Tororo the third Regia in Uganda, after Kabale Regia and the Regia of Western Uganda.
The new Tororo Regia will be affiliated to the Senatus of Uganda and will be seated at the See of the Archdiocese of Tororo, headquartered in Nyangole.
Currently, Tororo Regia will have jurisdiction over:
- 6 Comitia
- 22 Curiae
- 12 directly attached Praesidia
Like any Council, Tororo Regia will have 12 directly attached Praesidia , as recommended by the Concilium, so that at least one Praesidium report is received at every monthly Regia meeting.
The Regia will now oversee Legion of Mary work in the Ecclesiastical Province of Tororo, which includes:
- Archdiocese of Tororo
- Diocese of Jinja
- Diocese of Kotido
- Diocese of Moroto
- Diocese of Soroti
The inauguration of the new Regia is scheduled for 11th October 2025, with the Holy Mass to be presided over by His Grace, the Most Rev. Emmanuel Obbo, AJ, Archbishop of Tororo.
What is a Regia in the Legion of Mary?
A Regia is a type of council within the Legion of Mary, designated by the Concilium to exercise authority over Legion activities in a large geographical area. It ranks immediately below a Senatus and may be affiliated directly to the Concilium or through a Senatus, as determined by the Concilium itself.
A Regia continues to carry out the local responsibilities it had prior to elevation, while also taking on broader administrative and supervisory duties. The membership of a Regia consists of:
- The officers of all directly affiliated councils and Praesidia
- The original members of the council upon which Regia status has been conferred
A Spiritual Director is appointed for the Regia by the bishops of the dioceses within its jurisdiction. The Regia also ratifies the election of officers in its affiliated councils, who are expected to attend Regia meetings when possible.
In addition, the Regia appoints correspondents to maintain communication and oversight over distant affiliated councils. These correspondents attend Regia meetings, prepare reports from received minutes, and participate in discussions, though they do not vote unless they are full members of the Regia.
What is a Council in the Legion of Mary?
In the Legion of Mary, a council is a governing body that coordinates, supervises, and supports the work of the Legion in its designated area. Councils exist at various levels:
- Curia (basic council supervising several Praesidia)
- Comitium (supervises several Curiae)
- Regia (oversees Comitia and Curiae in large regions)
- Senatus (supervises multiple Regia and Comitium within a country or region)
- Concilium (the highest council, based in Dublin, Ireland, with worldwide authority)
A Curia or Comitium are approved by a Regia/Senatus and Concilium approves a Regia and Senatus based on the growth and organizational needs of the Legion in that area.
