Venerable Edel Quinn – The Pioneer of the Legion of Mary in East Africa

Edel Quinn, a heroic lay missionary of the Legion of Mary, was born on 14th September 1907 in Ireland and died on 12th May 1944 at the young age of 36. Despite battling tuberculosis, she dedicated her life to the spread of the Legion of Mary, bringing it to East Africa, especially Uganda, where her work continues to bear fruit.

Her deep spirituality and unwavering trust in Our Lady were the driving forces behind her mission. She once wrote:

“What a great thing it is to be an apostle! Let us thank God for calling us to be one. Let us love Him for being so good to us and let us be faithful to our vocation.”

Edel’s legacy of faith, sacrifice, and devotion continues to inspire Legionaries worldwide. In recognition of her heroic virtues, the Church declared her Venerable in 1994, a step toward sainthood.
