Message on the feast of the Immaculate Conception by the Senatus President
Today 8th December, we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Queen and Our Mother in the Legion of Mary.
“It was befitting that the Holy Trinity preserves Mary from the original sin for she was to be the Mother of Jesus Christ who was to repair for the great injury caused by the accursed sin of Adam” (St Alphonsus de Ligouri in the Glories of Mary). She is therefore Mary Immaculate, conceived without sin. What a great blessing to mankind to have a mother who is spotless before God.
The devotion of Legionaries towards this aspect of Mary, the Immaculate Conception, is inculcated in the Legion of Mary system. For example, the Legion altar laid in all Legion of Mary meetings consists of the Holy Image for the Immaculate Conception. The Vexilium has a similar picture. The same Holy Image is used at the Acies, the great Central function of the Legion. The Annual General Reunion is another Legion of Mary function organised on or as near as possible to the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It has not been possible to organise the reunion in many areas this year 2020 due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. However we thank God for the few Councils that may have made it. The prayer, “O Mary conceived without sin…” is one of the invocations in the prayers of the Legion.
God destined Mary to crush the head of the serpent, which by seducing Adam and Eve entailed death upon all men. He would therefore not let her be a slave of sin at all. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers. He will strike your head and you will strike his heel” (Gen 3: 15) prophesied the Almighty God while addressing Satan. The Legion of Mary aims with all its heart to form Legionaries, children of Mary in its fullness in order to achieve the pledge of victory foretold by God.
What then should a Legionary do as he strives to become the offspring of Mary Immaculate?
Dear Legionary, you realize that we have a precious gift in our hands. Mary the Immaculate, Mother of Jesus is our Mother as well. Who are we, you and I to share a Mother with God? Let us therefore love her sincerely with all our heart and all our strength. Make her known and loved by all people; receive Sacraments, attend Legion of Mary meetings and carry out duties; invoke her powerful intercession in all challenges of life including the present situation of CoVID-19 pandemic through the rosary her favorite prayer. Wear the miraculous medal and the Scapular with confidence. Live your daily life with Mary, you will not regret.
O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you.
Happy Feast day.
Remember to thank God today for the gift of the Immaculate Mother.
